Surge in pest activity noted since 2020 Covid19 lockdown

Most pest controllers will tell you that there has been a significant increase in activity of rats and mice since the early 2020 Covid19 lockdown.

The BPCA (British Pest Control Association) and the NPTA (National Pest Control Association) have also confirmed that there has been over a 50% and 40% increase in rat and mouse activity respectively. (BPCA acticle).

Why is this?

The most likeley cause of the increase in rodent sightings is that there is less footfall in shops and less food waste from bins. Especially from the hospitality sector and offices in our inner cities and town centres. Rodents have to move further afield to find a new food source. Which is more likely to be our homes.

Also, most people spend more time at home and are more likely to encounter rodents looking for food. For example an increase number of rodents are attracted to bird feeders.
